THANK YOU!!!!
Best way to deter raccoons from your garden? Have a real pesky son of a gun that has torn open fertilizer and spread it across the patio, has torn up my tomatoes and green peppers, and some flowers. Have shot at it with a pellet gun, but it just looks at me like, "yeah, whatever!" Know anything about tomato plants? So I bought a tomato plant and I've had it for a few weeks now. It's pretty healthy and it keeps growing bigger, but the thing is I live in northern California (San Francisco) where it's cold and foggy all the time. I know tomatoes grow best in hot conditions. I leave my plant outside on my balcony since it's the only place I have for it (I live in a studio so I don't have an actual garden). Should I bring the plant indoors since it's cold outside? Also, should I be adding fertilizer? This is my first time gardening (or trying my hand at it).
When is the best time of year to plant an herb garden? I'm in the Southeastern U.S. I'm just tired of paying through the nose for fresh herbs in the grocery store. Had to transplant my 7 foot tomato plant! Will it make it?!? I've had my tomato plant in the ground for a few months now. It's grown over 7 ft tall and pretty much took over my whole garden. I had it fenced it, but had a bad storm and the wind took the fence down and the tomato plant sprawled out all over the garden. I tried to restake it with the fence, but it didn't work, it was just too big! Since we needed to do SOMETHING, my husband dug it up, severed it's main root, and replanted it, letting it sprawl on the ground. He put good fertilizer in it, and we are hoping for the best. It has a bunch of small tomatoes on it. It looks dead right now, but a few people say it may come back around with enough sun and water. What do you think?!?!

Help with biology I want to check my answers 10 POINTS BEST ANSWER?!?!? 1.Viruses are known to “skirt” the boundary of life and non-life. They contain genetic material surrounded by a coat that may be involved in infection. Viruses change over time and have been observed multiplying inside dead cells. They require a host for the raw materials and energy that enable them to synthesize vital chemicals, multiply, spread, and change over time. What characteristic of life is NOT associated with viruses? a. The possession of genetic material b. The ability to reproduce c. Having its own metabolism d. The ability to evolve 2.Copper is used by farmers to kill bacteria living in the soil. Copper also occurs in the animal manure that farmers spread on their fields as fertilizer. The metal remains in topsoil for hundreds of thousands of years. Recently it has been noted that populations of bacteria resistant to copper are emerging. How would Charles Darwin explain the emergence of copper resistant bacteria? a.As copper concentrations in soils increased, copper sensitive bacteria gave rise to copper resistant bacteria in order to adapt to the metal poison. b.The soil originally contained a small population of copper–resistant bacteria, which had greater reproductive success as copper was added. c.Over time, copper sensitive bacteria learned to break down the metal poison as it was being added to the soil. d.The growing concentration of copper triggered changes in the genetic material of soil bacteria resulting in copper resistance in more of their offspring. 3.. It was recently discovered that an amoeba (a single celled organism) falls asleep (goes “dormant”) when exposed to valium. Humans also fall asleep when exposed to valium. The amoeba releases a chemical resembling valium that is almost identical to a chemical released by the human brain. This example best illustrates which theme in biology? a.Unity within diversity b.Structure and function c.Acquiring and using energy d.Homeostasis 4.Pyrodictium are single-celled organisms, lacking a nucleus. They live near deep-sea active volcanic openings preferring acidic conditions and temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius (i.e., a temperature above boiling if at sea level) and die at temperatures below 82ºC. Their genetic material was unlike any other single-celled organism known to humans before 1980. In what domain is Pyrodictium? a. Bacteria b. Archaea c. Eukarya d. Prokarya 5. How do I care for potted vegetables? I'm an amateur gardener. Last year was my first attempt at growing vegetables in containers on my balcony. I did okay. I got a few handfuls of tomatoes which were delicious and some nice looking herbs. But my cucumbers weren't so great. This year, I'm going to change tactics. What kind of potting soil is the best for planting in containers? Should I add something to the soil? What kind of fertilizer should I use and how often should I be using it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Help with tomato plants? We're growing tomato plants in pots on our deck, and the leaves are turning a little yellow, and I'm guessing they're lacking nutrients. We don't want to use chemical fertilizers like miracle grow, etc. Can anyone suggest an organic way to get some nutrition into the soil? We aren't able to compost at this time, btw, which I know would be the best solution.

What is your best suggestion for starting up a 4-acre farm? What is your best suggestion for starting a 4-acre farm? I have 4 acres of land, and am thinking of clearing that land and starting a small farm for next year's growing season. I need some advice as to what would be the easiest crop to start with, that I could start and make a decent profit, with little start-up cash. I can provide some details for you: - I am in NJ. - I can probably get water and simple irrigation, low-tech (hoses down each row of crops, watering at the roots?) I could also buy seeds. - I don't have much farming experience, but catch on quickly. - I don't have room to start crops indoors, so I'd need a crop that I could start after last frost, by planting seeds outside on the farm. - I'm not opposed to various marketing methods. For example, I'd be willing to do a crop where the best sales would be at local farmer's markets. I could also sell to various local restaurants, etc. I can also research other avenues of selling wholesale, to others in the market (canneries, etc.) - I've been thinking about tomatoes, can those be started outdoors with seeds, or do I really have to start seedlings indoors? What would be good varieties? I'd love some tomato-farm advice! (I'm pretty sure tomatoes are the state vegetable of NJ.) - I need a crop that is fairly easy to maintain and pick. - I plan to go completely organic, so I'd like recommendations on good methods of organic fertilizers, etc. But I'm concerned about not getting as plentiful a crop with organic methods... - Recommendations on a good book or two would be great (I've heard "5 Acres and Independence" and "The New Organic Grower" might be good starting points...?) Ok, that's about it, I really appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Thanks!

Wanting to grow a garden this year. I do not have a green thumb help!!!!? So i am wanting to start growing a small garden this year. Any tips for growing tomatoes in a container? First off, I live in Southern CA so it's going to be getting warm really soon, and unbearably hot in about two months, lol. I'm going to be putting my plant (possibly two) on my 2nd story landing that receives at least 8hrs of light a day. I've been researching a lot online and I've come up with a few questions that any advice would be greatly appreciated. -I'm going to use a quality soil with fertilizer included so I shouldn't have to add any until 3 months (reccomended on the package), right? -When it does come time to add fertilizer, is it best to go with a triple 15, osmocote, or specific veggie/tomato food? -How do I apply the fertilizer, sprinkle on the top soil, right? -How often should I add fertilizer, I've been reading once every 2 weeks. Is that about right, or more often? -When should I be adding supplements (like calcium, I'll probably use eggshells/epsom salt, or fish emulsion, or lime juice) if at all or how often? I'd like to prevent that bottom rot of the fruit that can happen. -Silly question, when I've received all the tomatoes the plant will fruit, what then?! I want to get a determinant (Roma) and possibly an indeterminant (Sweet 100). Should I keep fertilizing as usual? -Once summer starts to end, the plants can stay outside right? Do I need to trim it, or anything else? -If all goes well and the plant survives the winter, all I need to do is fertilize during the spring and I should theoretically get another crop, yes? Or is it a one time deal with these plants, and I'll have to buy new ones next year? They may sound silly but this is my first time growing a vegetable and I'd really like them to thrive and get a good harvest. I didn't mention it, but I'll be getting as big a container as I can- I was able to pick that up at least from all the articles and videos. Thank you so much! Anything else you think may be helpful would also be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! I guess once the determinant dies and I toss the plant out, is the soil reusable (as long as I noticed no disease). All I need is to fertilize, add supplements and it's good for next year? lol, I'm a dance and science teacher so I tend to overthink things just a bit...
Container Gardening Question? I have planted Tomatoes and Bell Peppers in five gallon buckets how often do you need to fertilize them in order for them to produce? How to winterize my vegetable garden? My vegetable garden is about 40 x 40. I live in Central IL. What should I do for it this fall so it will produce well next spring and summer. I intend to till it up but don't know about adding fertilizer, lime, compost, etc. I see those huge piles of fertilizer along corn fields but the pile is very small compared to the size of the field, how would you know how much of the stuff to use in your home garden and how on earth would you ever spread so little of amount? Ten points and a bushel of tomatoes for the best answer!
Any experts on Atkins or South Beach or other low carb high nutrition diets for comments? I am looking for any expert advisers who would take the time to comment on my views. Simply because I do not want to steer anyone down a path to poor health since I have been down several myself and with bad results. So I am seeking comments on my post that follows: <<<<<<<<POSTING1>>>>>>>>> Hi, After reading your question I thought I would give you some pointers I have learned the hard way from my own bad 'uninformed' choices. Keeping to any plan that fights against bad habits is tough but being fit and strong versus being fat and sickly is all about how many calories you eat versus how many you burn and IF the calories are mostly the BEST QUALITY PROTEINS or mostly junk sugar-carbs. Many years ago I found that the Atkins Diet Plan made me healthier compared to my old high carb diet since it put my diabetes symptoms into remission, but PLEASE consider my experiences when I used the Atkins high cholesterol and fat philosophy for my long term nutrition. After the Atkins plan promoted many diseases, what now works best in order for me to keep my pruritus-urticaria in remission, after my gallbladder-biliary-liver and heart disease problems, is a 96% VEGAN diet, (for the required B12), that is low-carb low-fat and HIGH-PROTEIN. Because of my gallbladder-biliary-liver disease I no longer can eat much olive oil or dressings or nuts or other fats or any cholesterol because it causes immediate pruritus since my liver’s biliary system is plugged with cholesterol and calcium sludge, and I can not eat too many carbs because of yeast infections that break out after one, two, or three high carb meals. What I now do is what they teach most students in high school nutrition classes - which is to add up the vitamins and minerals from my ‘digestible’ foods and calculating the RDA's [Recommended Dietary Allowances] or DV's [Daily Reference Values] for each day to see if I am more than 100% for Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Thiamine-VitB1, Riboflavin-VitB2, Niacin-VitB3, VitB6-Pyridoxine, and Folate-VitB9. Things like bran are not digestible and not added since it is like a work horse or work oxen eating straw instead of digestible grass or alfalfa leaves. Also, after I accidentally poisoned myself with supplements, I leaned that supplements like iron and magnesium and colloidal silver etc are super toxic since they are 'metallic' minerals and oftentimes raw fertilizers with a 1000 fold markup. These ‘metallic’ mineral supplements have not yet been converted into a non-toxic food when during photosynthesis the electrons in a fertilizer are stripped away making it the more positively charged ‘non-metallic’ and non-toxic mineral element within the plant. Also, the highly profitable synthetic vitamin supplements I used to purchase have no unambiguous research backing them, and there is some obviously valid research concluding that they are more toxic than beneficial to any animal that has ever consumed them. What now keeps my diseases in remission is mostly a diet of cooked lentils then mixed with tomato sauce and boiled celery to make a quick microwave super high protein veg-chili. I boil all my foods since my digestive system is in such poor shape and I need as many nutrients as I can get out of the semi-expensive foods I buy. I used to eat much more meat when I was an Atkins dieter, before my pruritus attacks became so obvious that the cholesterol and fats in the meat or eggs and the calcium in the homemade yogurt I was eating was the root cause to the problem. FYI - IF you know of people getting colon cancer, it was during my Atkins period I learned to always eat enough vegetables to be a minimum of 2 x the weight of the meat that I ate - in order to not have any constipation or worse. I used to have reddish stools since I was likely on my way to getting colon cancer myself from eating much more meat protein than I could ever digest properly in my stomach and colon. After the Atkins Diet allowed my present health issues, I replaced the crock potted round steak or beef heart or chicken and sometimes river trout in my chili with lentils, because I learned that the nutritional content of lentils ranks high alongside, and comparable to, very lean meat or lean fish if it is grown in well fertilized soil. [Note: e.g. the labels on store bought spinach sometimes have a 4 fold difference in nutrition based upon the fertility of the soils and the growing methods for the farms it is grown on.] I also eat a-lot of boiled frozen broccoli and boiled organic or re-washed and re-boiled canned spinach with a vinaigrette of organic sugar with glass_bottled_cider_vinegar. The glassware is because of some friends that got lupus from eating too much plastic stuff, or inhaling it since they were house painters who used vinyl paints. The nutritional DV numbers that I now eat are three times what most others in my family are eating every day. I keep at about 100% and they are about 25 to 33%, but they are all morbidly obese diabetics. Even though I was once morbidly obese myself and had a heart attack from too many carbs for too long, (which I think gave me all the symptoms of beriberi, scurvy and pellagra, along with the beginnings of my gallbladder-biliary-liver disease), I am now more fit in comparison to most others I know. I hope you have learned something from my ‘mistakes’ that will soon help you along your way. <>< My best to you and for your good health, A1 [(-:] PS1 - I currently feel that what Dr. Fuhrman MD teaches is the best nutritional information available in the nation. http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/cat-low-carb-high-protein.html http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2627/2 http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=43 http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ PS2 - Boiling spinach can reduce the pesticides from 80 to 95%+ as per canning studies done in the 70's, by boiling the pesticides off with the steam - after boiling it long enough to pull the pesticides out of the plant. Boiling also reduces the hundreds of percents of acid carbs, like folic acid, that makes eating a lot of raw spinach not digest easily and it would sometimes cause loose stools, and also breaks it down a first step so it is then easier to digest in the stomach. It also kills any bacteria or e-coli problems that may have somehow been introduced into the raw or commercially canned produce. http://www.foodnews.org/index.php
How do i pollinate my tomatoes and melons?what pesticide to use?Neem oil? my tomatoes have been growing fast. last month, 1 month after planted from seed, when i transplanted them, they were mostly 1-4 inches tall. now all of them are about 1 to 3 feet tall. i did not use no fertilizer nor pesticide. but how do i keep the blossoms from shriveling or dying, as that has been happening. also is neem oil organic and same, and won't cause cancer. i've been getting bugs. and my cantaloupes, which are planted from 1 month ago, are already having a lot of blooms. how do i pollinate them. one year i planted cantaloupes, i remember seeing a lot of blooms but no melons? would neem oil be the best pesticide, which is organic, doesn't cause cancer or problems and help with my bug problem. which type should i buy, how do i use it
Garden questions, how, when, where, how much? I planted a small garden last year a few things didn't survive and so I am taking the time to really research what I did wrong, and how I can make it better. I am looking for a website that may have all the answers. I live in SE Kansas. Which is a little dry so I have to water a lot, my yard has little shade and is quite flat, so I can easily have a large garden. I plan to plant corn, okra, onions, radishes, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, 4 kinds of hot peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkin, strawberries, squash, cucumbers. (which this is only about 5 more than last year) How much space do I need to have between plants like the tomatoes call for 24 inches? How often should I water, do some plants require less water than others? Should I group some together, what should not be close to what and what attracts bugs? I know that watermelon, cantaloupe and pumpkin should be seperate but can they grow somewhat close to one another? Any suggestions on the strawberries, I remember my grandma kept them by themselves because they spread and I think she kept a wood edge around them? What kinds of fertilizers have the best results, anything that I may have that could be organic, egg shells, coffee, tea grounds, ect.? What about keeping the bugs out, I know about seven dust but anything I could use to keep the bugs out the I don't have to worry about my kids coming in contact with? When should I start planting, I know that our last freeze is shortly after Easter? I know that this seems like a lot of questions and in a way it is. I really had a hard time last year with squash and cucumber the plant got moldy and died half way through the season. I still don't know why though. Any advice is helpful and a website that may have all these questions would be great. Thank you so much for you time.

This year I added some slow release fertilizer (specifically made for tomatoes and vegetables) to the top 1 - 3 inches of the soil. Fertilizer burn on this tomato plant? Hello everyone, Could someone tell me if this looks like fertilizer burn? I'm new to gardening. I built a homemade Earthbox out of a plastic storage bin. I added about a cup and a half of fertilizer down the center strip. The directions for the box called for two cups, but that for me seemed way too much... it wouldn't even mound up that high. We have been having afternoon showers here, though... for the past three days+. The box/fertilizing strip are covered with a white garbage bag that acts as mulch. I'm thinking that rain could have wet the strip? I planted this transplant during the evening on a humid/rainy day. If it is fertilizer burn what can I do? Immediately remove the fertilizer and tomato? The box also has a bellpepper transplant that seems to have the ends doing the same "burning" thing... http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fertilizerburnov0.jpg

I have tomato plants and would like to know if there is any type of organic fertilizer besides manure? If anybody knows of a natural herbicide too, that would be great.
Why did my otherwise-healthy tomato plant stop growing? I planted two small "patio tomato" plants in two 5-gallon pots. I added nice potting soil, plenty of water, organic tomato fertilizer, plenty of sun (but not too much), etc. One is thriving and upwards of 2 feet tall. The other one looks healthy, but has stopped growing at about 1 foot. I can't figure it out. The stumpy one grew a tomato very early - is that tomato robbing the plant of nutrients? It also looks like that early tomato "stole" the center stalk - rendering the plant unable to "decide" how to grow upwards. There are two shoots off the sides of that tomato, but neither has thickened and become the center stalk. Is this possible? Or am I simply being impatient because the plant will eventually grow?
Can I spray fertilizer on tomato's flowers? Seaweed liquid fertilizer (foliar spray), can i spray in the tomato flowers?

Does this seem like a great profile for a tomato fertilizer? Nitrogen: 125 ppm Phosphorus: 44 ppm Potassium: 125 ppm Calcium: 14.3 ppm Magnesium: 47 ppm Boron: 0.32 ppm Sulphur: 34 ppm I'm puting together my own fertilizer but I want opinions on the profile before I go ahead and mix it. Any advice would be appreciated. Lindsey: I read a report online that tomatoes grown with this rate of Nitrogen do better. So I'm not sure about lowering it. I agree that I need more calcium. A better range would be 120-160ppm. But I don't know where to get it from. I have limestone but it doesn't come with a proportional rating so I can't be sure how much to use. btw, I'm growing indoors.
Can the "Patch Perfect" grass fertilizer be used for other plants as well? For example, a tomato plant? I saw a commercial for Patch Perfect, which was said to be a grass growing steroid. They even aired a scene of this fertilizer with very healthy grass growing out of it, growing in nothing but the fertilizer itself. I've seen a product like this work pretty much the same, so I know this stuff works. I was just wondering, however, if you could grow other plants out of it as well? For example, a tomato plant?
Can tomato plants grow in 6 inches of soil? The only sunny spot in the yard was previously landscaped with river rocks. It would be out of the question to dig up and move all these rocks so I'm putting dirt and topsoil on top of the rocks. I plan to water the plants nearly every day and provide sufficient fertilizer. If tomato plants are grown in 6" of soil, will the roots spread out horizontally? How big could the plants get with this amount of soil?
What would be the Proper Shading for Tomato plants? Does Tomato need a lot of shade? is Sun too bad? Also what are the good bio fertilizers for Tomato? Is cow dung good enough?

Tomatoes Question!! Ok so I added ALOT of high-nitrogen fertilizer to my plants? (8-4-4) a couple of weeks ago. They don't appear burned, but I have learned that too much nitrogen hinders fruit production. Question: Should I add a high-phosphorous fertilizer right now or wait a few more weeks for the high-nitrogen fertilizer to break down??? Thanks...
coffee grinds as fertilizer? I hear coffee grinds is a good organic fertilizer but not sure how to use it. Should it be mixed in the soil or can you just sprinkle on top? Does it matter? Also, I'm specifically using them for my window box tomato plant (city living). Is it good for tomato plants and how much coffee should I use?
how long does it generally take tomato plants to fruit after they produce flowers? My potted plants have produced flowers already, going on two or three weeks now. They show no signs of disease or deficiency, and I've watered frequently, sometimes using peroxide, and had an alternating regimen of normal fertilizer and comfrey tea. It is hella hot here in Texas though, so perhaps the high temperature has something to do with it. They are in partial sunlight and recieve about 4-5 hours of direct light each day.
What kind of soil and fertilizer and whatever else I need to start the small garden in my backyard? I plan to plant two tomato plants, 20 corn seeds, several zuchinni seeds, several cucumber seeds and 10 strawberry plants. Wanted to boost better and healthy crops. I live in zone 6 area.
