Organic corn gluten to restart lawn? I have a lawn made of weeds. I want to create a new lawn in the easiest, least expensive way but still be safe for my puppies. I have read about corn gluten and I am pretty sure this is the way to go. It is mid summer so too late to use as a preemergent. I am wondering if I should put some down in the fall first? Then I would lay down again in spring but would I still be able to plant Kentucky Blue seed grass or do I need to wait for fall to seed the grass and will the corn gluten still be effective then? Just trying to figure out the best way to do this. Any suggestions?
Should we kill all of our grass/weeds and start new? My wife and I live in Charlotte, NC and just bought a home with a semi established yard. Our yard guy thinks most of our yard is bermuda and weeds and we should apply two treatments to kill the grass/weeds in June/July and then reseed in September. Should we do that or should I just put out weed and feed today and seed in September? Thanks P.S. He says Kentucky Blue Grass is a great grass for us since we do not have a watering system and he says it's drought tollerant.
Grass Seed for State of Virginia? I have very sandy/clay like soil. I've tried several brands with no real success. Just tried Pennington Kentucky Blue and it only took in spots (not the spots I wanted it to). What would someone suggest for poor soil conditions like mine?

Keeping a Green lawn? A few weeks ago i put some scotts super turf builder fertilizer on my lawn along with some grass seeds. After getting it cut today i noticed how pretty and green it was....it looked like plush green rug. I have to admit that im proud of myself because this is my first home and the first time that i have ever attempted to take care of a lawn and just a few weeks ago the grass was so yellow and dry. My question is how do i maintain that pretty green plush look? I havent been watering it everyday but then it hasent been that hot either...not yet anyway. Should i buy more fertilizer and grass seeds or should i just water it everyday once the weather gets hotter? Also i saw a some seeds called kentucky blue glass and i thought about buying that but i thought maybe im jumping gun being that im a rookie at this. Any suggestion on what i should do to maintain my lawn is appreciated? Thanks!
Advice for re-seeding the pastures? Ok, so in the next week we're going to reseed our pastures. We have 3 pastures. One with a barn that has to be as grass-less as possible for the horses that founder, so we won't be reseeding it. Then the second field is 4-6 acres. We're going to split it in half to seed it. Then the third one is only 2+ acres. We're going to seed that one all at once, since it's the only one we can completly close off. What grass would you suggest for a mild climate, humid summers, cold winters? I was thinking Kentucky Blue Grass. Summers get up to 100 degrees, winters down to 20. There are 3 horses and two other large animals that live on the property. Any other suggestions or tips? This will be the first time I've done it. The last time it was done was a few years ago by someone else. Please no rude comments. I'm in the US. For some reason Yahoo! Disagrees with me. I live on the East Coast.
Is Kentucky 31 Fescue safe to use in my horse pasture in heavy use muddy areas?I Also how do I fertilize? I've read that Kentucky 31 is very tough and easy growing ;making it ideal for heavy use mucky areas (near water trough/gate/barn entrance). The rest of my 2-3 acre pasture I want to over seed/interseed with a timothy /orchard grass/ blue grass "horse mix".However, I keep reading conflicting reports about Kentucky 31's use with horses. I have a 2y/o filly and 10 yr old mare-not going to be bred. I'm confused because some sources say its OK for non-preg horses, others say it isn't good(stunts growth, causes sensitivities)-does anyone have it in their pasture? Is it good for those mucky areas? Also,I'm new at composting my horse manure( use pine pellet bedding). I want to use it to fertilize my pastures, as the grass is sparse and pastures (2 acre each) are on small side.Is using the compost a good way to improve grass growth and strength? How long does the compost need to age? Will the pine deplete nitrogen in the soil if I don't age it long enough? What about lime or bone meal to help "cure" it? Sorry for so many questions, but I'm used to big pastures with low maintenance-I want to max out what little space I have....
