Best grass seed for shady areas? About 1/3 of mt yard is always shaded. Part of that is actually wooded. The soil has a LOT of clay. Exposed roots are also a problem. I don't have the money for an expensive landscape job. I just need to stop what soil is left from washing away. Plus it looks crappy. (no plants please, just grass).

I took a plastic Coke bottle, filled it with soil and threw in some grass seeds. Its now stands nice and tall inside the Coke bottel and overflows like hair where it exits the mouth of the bottle. Its fun to trim it because you can layer i like hair or cut it nice and short, its such an attractive feauture. I read somewhere that you can plant grass on a lava rock because the rocks so rich in nutrients that it grows extremely fast. A friend of mine took her silk stalkings, filled it with soil, threw in some grass seeds and made a knot at the end. She sewed 2 buttons on for the eyes and a big one for the mouth and it forms a little face with green hair which she can cut when it gets too long. So any people out there that have any other interesting ideas of what to do with grass except sowing it on a lawn, please let me know. Its a lotta fun !

Why did my new grass from seeds grow then die? I planted grass seeds and they grew, now just three weeks later, quite a bit of it is dieing. They have been watered and fertilized properly. I planted the proper kind of seeds, again, they grew in beautifully. It appears to be turning brown. I can pull it up with just a brush of my hand. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I know about overwatering so I was careful of that. The seeds are shaded and in a shaded area beneath a tree.

What's the effect of temperature on grass seeds? I recently did an experiment on 3 species of grass seeds. All of which are C3 plants (Cynodon dactylon, Pennisetum clandestinum and Festuca arundinacea). The seeds in total darkness grew, however, did not get their full colour and were very weak; it also grew at the same rate as the standard. The seeds in the light grew much faster than the other two.
