Does anyone know if you can plant grass seed on top of sod that had already been laid and died? I bought a new house and had sod laid in the whole yard. I had to leave the weekend that they laid it and everyone knows that when sod is new, you have to water it for at least three days pretty much non-stop. I need to plant grass seed in SE PA in early June. Not ideal, but how can I have the best success? I already have a good seed for my area - Outside Pride's Combat Extreme. Area is partial to full sun, and the seed accommodates that. I know that a 1/4" covering of peat moss, clean straw, etc. and frequent watering are important, too. Any other tips?

I have planted grass before, and I know there's certain steps to take to plant grass. I only need help in a few spots. I got a delivery of fertalized soil and I put the soil in the area that I'm planting grass. The area is about 20' by 15'. The soil has about an inch + of layer. I raked the soil to make sure it's nice and level. Now this is where I get confused... Do I need to pack down the soil, meaning, right now the soil is lose enough where you step on it you sink very little. If I do need to pack the soil please tell me how to I only have basic tools to work with. Next I know the soil has to be lose to mix grass seed in with then rake it so the seeds fall into the soil a little bit, but do I need to pack down the soil after the seeds are planted? I'm going to keep the paving slabs but I want to get rid of all the pebbles and replace them with grass so my daughter can run around next spring/summer. How do I do this? We planted bob sod there originally but it doesnt get enough sun (bob sod needs tons of sun) so I had to plant seed since they dont sell anything else here. I just planted a sun/shade mix. I keep it damp, and put down fresh soil- a manure compost mix that has done wonders in my garden and with my sod that is in the sun. THe grass is now about 3 inches tall. Should I mow it?

When you buy potting soil how do they filter out all of the seeds so only the seeds you plant will grow in it? Ok so most plants (like grass) re seed themselves or have some way of reproduction. How do they get all of the living plant matter out of potting soil? Do they cook it to kill the plants? wouldnt that kill the nutrients that the plants need to grow?

I took a plastic Coke bottle, filled it with soil and threw in some grass seeds. Its now stands nice and tall inside the Coke bottel and overflows like hair where it exits the mouth of the bottle. Its fun to trim it because you can layer i like hair or cut it nice and short, its such an attractive feauture. I read somewhere that you can plant grass on a lava rock because the rocks so rich in nutrients that it grows extremely fast. A friend of mine took her silk stalkings, filled it with soil, threw in some grass seeds and made a knot at the end. She sewed 2 buttons on for the eyes and a big one for the mouth and it forms a little face with green hair which she can cut when it gets too long. So any people out there that have any other interesting ideas of what to do with grass except sowing it on a lawn, please let me know. Its a lotta fun !

how do you properly plant Southern Belle grass seeds in the fall? I just planted some Southern Belle grass seeds almost 2 weeks ago and haven't seen any results. The ground is still moist from the heavy rain we got on the third day after initial seeding. Do I keep watering it while its 40 and 45 degrees outside or do I water at all? What is the easiest way to plant grass seed? I remember my mother used to cover the grass seed up with newspapers for a few days and keep them soaked so the seed wouldn't blow away (it's very windy here.) Is that a good idea? I guess I'd have to put rocks on the newspapers....
If I plant grass seed on mossy ground w/o stripping up the moss 1st, is there any chance the grass will grow? Stripping the moss, killing the moss - it all sounds so HARD! If I'm too lazy to remove the moss, but still aerate the soil (rented rototil?) and put down all the requisite fertilizer and use shade grass, am I just wasting my time?
