The same seed as the grass I have already established. Problem is it didnt grow so I laid some turf down. Now I have this long grass that grows 10 x faster then the rest of the lawn, shooting up through out the yard in places. What's the effect of temperature on grass seeds? I recently did an experiment on 3 species of grass seeds. All of which are C3 plants (Cynodon dactylon, Pennisetum clandestinum and Festuca arundinacea). The seeds in total darkness grew, however, did not get their full colour and were very weak; it also grew at the same rate as the standard. The seeds in the light grew much faster than the other two. I took a plastic Coke bottle, filled it with soil and threw in some grass seeds. Its now stands nice and tall inside the Coke bottel and overflows like hair where it exits the mouth of the bottle. Its fun to trim it because you can layer i like hair or cut it nice and short, its such an attractive feauture. I read somewhere that you can plant grass on a lava rock because the rocks so rich in nutrients that it grows extremely fast. A friend of mine took her silk stalkings, filled it with soil, threw in some grass seeds and made a knot at the end. She sewed 2 buttons on for the eyes and a big one for the mouth and it forms a little face with green hair which she can cut when it gets too long. I need a large, fast growing bush that can survive in cooler climates. Anyone have any suggestions? My house is located on a tall hill next to an old alley that the city no longer uses anymore. What's left of it is used solely as a driveway for my neighbor and myself. The bottom portion of the alley is gone. Grass seed has been planted and it's no longer usable as a drive of any kind. I'm having a problem with the locals walking down what portion of my drive is still paved and following through my side yard, (the old unpaved alley), and effectively using my yard as their own private shortcut to the main street. It wouldn't be a big deal except the kinds of locals that are using my yard as their shortcut, tend to throw trash in my yard and in my dumpster. (I have to have everything in a bag or the sanitation company complains.) And sometimes at night, I get people walking down through there and I can hear them talking and going on but I can't see them. I used to have problems with people hanging out down there when I had a large burning bush blocking my view of the alley from my side window, but after cutting it down, I opened the area up and solved that problem. Unfortunately I still get a lot of people cutting through my yard. On occasion I might get a family with smaller children but it's usually older men with only shorts and sneakers on, and half the time they're drinking. I am so sick of seeing middle-aged beer guts and trash all in my landscaping. My neighbor has planted a few bushes to slowly close in his side of that alley and I didn't know if anyone recommended any bushes that grew fairly fast that I could plant on my side. I'm trying not to be obvious or flat out rude about it because I live in a very rural area and we don't have a local police department in the event that someone had some issue with what I was doing.

How to Get Grass to Grow in Red Clay? When we bought our brand new house, the builders filled the front yard with red clay and seeded with a mixture of Centipede and Rye grass. How can I revitalize my dying patch of Wrigley Field grass? Alright, here's the story. Last year when they replaced the outfield grass at Wrigley Field, they placed the old sod on the sidewalk to throw away and I picked up about a square foot of it on my way home. I decided to put it on my desk in a somewhat shallow pot (formerly a pie carrier) and under a grow lamp. After it stopped growing for a little while, I even added some red worms to help loosen up the compacted soil and to fertilize the grass (I put the grass trimmings back into the pot to feed the worms). It did well for awhile, there were some patches of dirt but they slowly filled in with new blades of grass. Fast forward to a couple months ago. I left town for a few weeks and left the grass in the care of my roommates. They under watered it and over trimmed it, and now I only have two blades of grass left. They both look like they're on their last leg. I don't want to add new grass seed, because the main reason I'm keeping this grass is that it's not just any grass, it's the grass from Wrigley Field, and I'd like to keep it that way. So, if possible, I want new blades of grass to grow from the two that I have left. For about a month I took very good care of them (including adding some miracle grow), with hopes that new blades of grass would shoot up. A couple blades came up, but died shortly after. As a last ditch effort, I recently moved the grass out of the shallow pot and into one that's about a foot deep to allow the roots some more space to grow. The new potting soil that I used is from Miracle Grow and has built in slow release fertilizer. The two remaining blades look slightly better, but they still seem like they could go at any minute and no new blades of grass have come up for at least a month. Sorry for the long post, but to summarize, my question is: Is there anything else I can do to help ensure that new grass begins to grow again? Or can I only wait and hope that it happens?

Is grass grown from regular grass seed okay for cats? My cat goes nuts over grass. I have bought him the already grown grass from Petco. However, it is usually only good for one time with him b/c he will not leave it alone b/c he is so obsessed with it. I have tried putting it on top of the refrigerator and other really high places, but he always manages to get up there. He chews on it so much that it never gets a chance to grow back. I have even put it outside, but even then it may grow again only once and then dries out fast. Lately, he has been running outside when I let my dog out to get to the grass in the yard.(and when I do catch him before he can run out he meows at the top of his lungs for at least 30 minutes b/c he is angry with me) When he does manage to get out, I stand with him for a couple of minutes just to let him munch on the grass a bit. It seems to me that it would be cheaper just to grow a really huge pot of grass outside and then bring it in for him every so often so he can much on it. Bermuda grass lawn in Austin TX? Moved into my house 2 years ago, bermuda grass lawn, no sprinkler system. It was in poor shape last summer, lots of bare patches, weed infiltration, and think sparse grass. This year I have installed a sprinkler system and couldn't be happier with the results. I have also put down a several bags of "dillo dirt" here (organic compost). My grass is green, thickening up by the day and I couldn't be happier. But... I have several issues that are next on the list to address before I can truly say I have a great lawn. Here they are in no particular order: 1. I have several areas where St. Augustine has infiltrated. With the compost and sprinklers, its going gang busters. It's about 20% of my front yard now. I really don't care if I have all bermuda or all St. Augustine what does kinda bother me is half of both. Any ideas other than get on my knees and start yanking? 2. I have some pretty bad nutsedge patches and they are growing like mad as well. I intend to hit them with Image Nutsedge this evening. I have heard of sedgehammer w/surfactant added but didn't see it at Lowes. Any other ideas for the nutsedge? 3. Low growing!!!!! My neighbor who (rightly) installed his sprinkler the day after the sod went in his bermuda grass 2 yrs ago now has a thick lush low growing lawn. Mine is green but still grows tall fast and goes to seed quickly. Any ideas to "retrain" the lawn to acheive low growing?

How do you get rid of the weed paspalum? I moved into a rental house & am trying to get the yard/garden in order. The turf is a very fine blade variety (maybe couch) & there is paspalum embeded throughout. I have been hand pulling it out by hand an hour a day for the last month filling up the green waste bin twice, but I am still not finished. It just continues to sprout up everywhere. It grows really fast with tall shoots with black seeds and its smothering/killing the turf leaving large bald patches in the lawn. The roots are really thick and hard to pull. I have looked at Big W, Woolworth's, Bunnings, Cole's, & the local garden centre for a product that says it will kill it but I cannot find anything that specifically says it kills paspalum -- most things say they kill bindi, dandelions, etc. but again nothing lists paspalum specificly. There are products like Zero & Roundup that I have seen, but they kill the grass too. Does anyone know what I should be looking for in a product's ingredients to kill paspalum?

Is sod hard to install? I am just getting ready to put my house on the market but before I sell I want to fix the grass where my dog has been going to the bathroom and has killed the grass. How do I get rid of Quack grass from my lawn? Hi All, My home is about 5 years old, I bought it 1.5 years ago. When I bought the house, there were some patches of grass that was growing faster than the regular lawn grass -- did not know what it was .. forgot about it. I asked tru-green to service the lawn last year and spent extra money to do the aeration and seeding .. No results and no support. Fast forwarding to today.. the bunchy grass (quack grass?) has grown like weeds and has taken over 1/2 of the lawn area. it is still early spring here and the normal lawn has not picked up any length yet.. but quack grass is over 6 inches already . My lawn is in very bad shape. I read some where in the blog to dig out the grass and patch up with grass patch - so I dug about 10 - 15 patches, bought Scotts lawn patch grass and put it on the patches. I have another 10 -15 spots to clear out -- Can one of you readers help if this is a good idea.. :? What else can I do ? Thanks for reading the post, I appreciate your help.

Durable grass for dog areas? I am in Zone 5 Indiana. Anyone know of a durable grass seed for my dog's areas? He has a huge kennel/ run and is also on a 50' tie out in the front. We had a major drought last summer and the grass died early. In certain areas, even no more than he is outside, he has worn off the grass in those areas. He loves being out and playing in the rain but it results in him being a muddy mess, not to mention it's ruining our lawn. Any particular grass seed more durable? My plant grew faster in cold water. WHY!!!? I did an experiment Each cup had 10 canary grass seeds in it and watered each with different water temperatures One cup had hot water- didn't grow one cup had regular room temp. water one cup had cold water the cup with cold water grew slightly more than the cup with water at room temp. why?? They all had the same amount of water and the same environment. Doesn't cold water kill plants?? ooo no. sorry I phrased my question wrong. the seeds are in soil. Throughout most of my childhood Cherry Street was the place I lived and breathed. Though it didn’t stand out like some of the other houses our house had the most trees and that is the main thing I remember about living on Cherry Street. Every house was covered from front to back with dozens of trees. There were tall skinny trees with long thin arm like branches that stretched the length of the yards. There were short stumpy trees with leafs that grew in random clusters scattered all over the tops and sprouted long skinny seeds every spring. My favorite was the big tree that sat in the center of our front yard. It was the biggest tree on the street. The trunk was thick it humped and grooved so that there were spots just big enough for our feet when we climbed up into it. Then about halfway up dozens of thick limbs exploded in different directions. The limbs grew tall and wild soaring and diving in all directions, twisting through the limbs of the surrounding trees. My siblings and I would all claim a spot in the tree naming it after whatever animal the shape of the odd branches seemed to take. We also used to roller skate. On Cherry Street the sidewalk is a nearly flawless smooth and glittered heaven. Even if you’d managed to trip over the one imperfection in the pavement –a jagged square of sidewalk that was just a little higher then the rest- you’d never scrape your knees of the palms of your hands. The side walk was soft and glassy falling down was like more like falling into pillows, so we’d just race as fast as we could without a worry. One thing we did have to worry about was the wacky neighbors. Right next to our house a woman lived with her husband and young granddaughter. Their house was perfection all year round. They lived in the only brick house on the street and their front doors where white with golden tinted windows that cast a glow when the sun hit them just right. When the wind blew you could smell the summer musk of freshly mowed grass which was always a luminous green even in the dead of winter. When it was springtime we’d sneak tastes of the sweet honeysuckle that grew along the fence line until they cut them down. In between their front door and another door that was also in the front but hardly used was a garden that was raised off the ground and surrounded by the same brick as their house. The flowers were even more colorful than the houses and sung as the sun rolled through the branches of the trees and into their petals. Every time they racked the leaves in their yard they would throw them over the fence and into our yard, my parents didn’t like it but my siblings and I were happy because it just gave us a bigger pile to jump into every fall. A little further down was the single vacant house on the street. It was white, just white and loomed over the surrounding houses. There was no mailbox and the numbers on the house were gone. Everything about the house left you with an empty feeling. There was no for sale sign in the yard and no trace of the owners, it was simply abandoned. The windows with their broken and twisted blinds were big glaring eyes that sent trimmers up our spines when passing it. The grass was overgrown and the bushes were wild and twisted together. Once we sunk in the back yard and took turns sticking our heads into the old doggy door at the grimy kitchen and ran for our lives when we swore we saw a ghost staring back at us. There is no place like Cherry Street. Whether my sibling and I were stealing the neighbor’s cat or their mail or if we were jumping from the tops of the tallest trees we dared to climb in, I will never forget living on Cherry Street.

Growing grass... Utah areas? So my husband was told that if we were to put down seed on very moist ground in between snow storms that it grows the best. They told us to tear up the ground, and lay the seed right before the next snow fall. That way when it melts again it germinates a lot faster or something. And you don't have to worry about keeping it watered (like you would in the spring time) Does anyone know if this actually works? I'd hate to buy the seed, and waste it if it don't.

baby duck food? i have a baby mallared duck who is growing REALLY fast and so he eats like twice his body waight, but the only thing i can get him to eat is bugs...grasshopperes, mothes, ect. i live in a neighborhood so it is really hard to find enough bugs to feed her. i have tried seeds, duck food, veggies, fruit, dandylion leaves and evean grass. what can i feed her!!!

How to turn this into a poem??? I wrote this about three years ago for english class. Everyone tells me that I have way to much description and no plot to it, though it fit the project perfectly, and that it kinda sucks. I am hoping to turn it into a poem or something more enjoyable. Please don't write the poem for me, but just give me suggestions. Thanks in advance! Riding through the dried woods of the Black Hills on a noble mount is an everlasting experience. A red-brown mare steadily making her way through the brush. Fresh pine needles, pinecones, maple leaves sporting autumn shades, and dried grass litter the dirt path. The rhythmic walking of the riding mount mixing with the gently cool breeze flowing through the trees. Twittering birds rush to and fro across the sky searching for sunflower seeds. Blue clouds heavy with precipitation gradually grow darker as they reach across the horizon. Evergreens mix with taller maple trees forming a barrier of safety. Squirrels leaping from tree to tree, collecting food for the winter to come. The entrancing smell of the sap mingles with decaying wood, fresh manure, and the promise of rain. The thick aroma of tree sap lifts into the air covering all it touches. The entrancing smell of the sap mingles with decaying wood, fresh manure, and the promise of rain. The silence is as enjoyable as a good book that you just can’t put down. Slowly the air becomes denser as the clouds prepare to release their burden. The sun hides its face as the dark clouds take over the sky. A cool breeze streams through the branches of the surrounding trees. A soft trickle of rain falls from the dense mass of clouds looming above. The birds dart for the cover of their nest, and squirrels find shelter in the trunks of the great maple trees. The rain falls harder and faster. The wet drops slide over the bare skin of the rider, creating a truly refreshing feeling. The pitter-patter of the rain echoes through the trees. The dried woods drink up every last drop the sky offered, and begged for more. Slowly the rain ceased to fall and the clouds floated away, revealing the brilliant sunrays once again.

WHAT TYPE OF PLANT GROWS THE FASTEST~!?!? Hola again people! Okay, im doing a science experiment on how magnets effect plant growth and i need to find a plant that i can buy the seeds and plant it and it will start growing in about a week! It has to be something easy and managable AND measurable growht (so not like grass or something). I CANT buy plants and i can only plant them... THX~!! btw it has to b like a flower =/
