Why do people blow leaves off of their lawns? Everyone wants to go green, and the leaves are food for the lawn. Can of food thrown on my lawn, eat it? Today I found a can of bushes baked beans on my lawn. I don't know where it came from. I inspected it and all I see is that the side of the can has a huge dent in it. No holes or punctures. It is unopened. Not expired. Do you think this is safe to eat? Grasses that germinate during the winter in SF Bay area? Hello, we just bought a house and have a bare back yard. It is literally just dirt. We really want an area of grass in the back as soon as possible. Are there any grasses that we could plant that would actually germinate around this time of year (not that would be green if planted during the summer or spring). I read something about rye grass and wheat grass, but wheat grass seems like it is more of a food than a lawn.

Should we tax grass lawns? Useless lawn grass is one of America's biggest crops, consuming vast resources and labor to maintain. The origin of lawns is well known: a display of wealth, to show the landowner did not have to grow food there. If we taxed lawns it would encourage people to grow food instead of useless grass. This would improve the sustainability of the average household, lessen our dependence on foreign imports of food, oil, etc, and properly designed food gardens use a whole lot less water than grass. It would even cut down on pollution.

What type of snake makes a good pet for a beginner? I'm considering getting a pet snake, but I'm not really sure what kind to get. I would prefer one that's good for beginners and not too aggressive. How do I stop a squirrel ruining my lawn? There is a naughty squirrel in the neighbourhood who is ripping up my lawn to bury his food. I have tried going out afterwards and removing the food, he comes back and digs up more lawn. I have a cat repellent transmitter that lets of a loud screech to deter cats from destroying the garden, but it doesn't seem to work for the squirrel. I'm in the u.k so i do not have access to guns or explosives before I get tons of killing suggestions. Anyone got any humane ways to rid this naughty creature? Add some distilled water and dissolve as much of the fertiliser as possible. Make up to the mark with more distilled water. Use a pipette to deliver 20.00 mL of sodium hydroxide (c=0.1000075 mol L-1) 4. Use another pipette to add 20.00 mL of the fertiliser solution to the same conical flask. 5. Add about 50 mL of distilled water to this flask, and then boil the mixture for about 10 minutes. A funnel placed on top of the flask will help prevent the hot mixture from splashing out and will help when adding more water from time to time, so that the volume in the flask stays fairly constant. 6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 with the other two conical flasks. 7. After the flask has cooled, add three drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate using standardised 0.9996 mol L-1 hydrochloric acid. 8. Repeat step 7 with the other two flasks (or more if necessary), until three concordant titres are obtained. titre obtained = 10.80 ml Please help with the calculations.. I don't know what to do with the mass and the distilled water at the start... because it is not directly reacting with the NaOH.. :(

Is it hard for a high school person to find a summer job? When I was young it was easy to find a job at a fast food restaurant or mow the lawns in my neighborhood. Now with all the Mexicans (illegal or not) in the States it seems that is all I see doing these types of jobs? Where are the high school kids working now? colortx asks if it scares me that Mexicans are becoming the majority in many states... you're damn right it scares me. I don't like it one bit. HELP!!! my friend is acting like a bum (like she is pregnant to get cash)!!!? my best friend... her mom was pregnant with her when she was 14 years old (will never have any idea who the dad is). she was raised by her grandparents. her grandma died. a couple years later her aunt killed herself OD on pills... soon after her grandpa killed himself by not taking his meds. the ONLY person that is left in her family is her mom. she lived with her mom & stepdad for a while... her stepdad used to beat her... her mom never believed her. she finally got the chance to get away from the abuse and moved in with this guy she was dating. he ended up being crazy (literally)... first, he got her addicted to herion so she wouldnt want to leave him. then he would beat her up. she had bruises all over her body from him (yet never reported it). she tried to leave him (but he would just sweet talk to her.. & she would end up going back for the drugs). she broke up with him... he ended up in the hospital from OD-ing on herion (tried to commit suicide).... he has gotten a little better since then (only bc it made him partially retarded)..... & then they were back together. about a year ago, he was driving. fell asleep at the wheel. truck flipped 15 times... and my girl flew out the window. she had many injuries and has just started walking again a couple of months ago. now, she stays with him bc he has a house.... she claims she has nowhere to go, which is pretty much true... her mom is a bitch & wants absolutely nothing to do with her (why the f in the first place did she have a kid if she dont wanna raise it???). but there are options such as domestic violence houses for woman trying to get away from abused people. she turned that down... she always told me bc she didnt wanna be considered homeless.... & she said she wouldnt get cigerettes or anything in there.. but if she is determined to leave him, you would think she would go. they have been cutting lawns, getting food stamps & a little money from unemployment.... i just found out that they are standing out on the street... acting like BUMS.........!!!! (yeah i dont wanna be considered homeless... BS)..we used to always make fun of these people... i don't understand how she stooped to this level. she is a smart girl, i just wished she used it in the right ways.... she said she stood out on the street saying she was pregnant.... & she was happy bc she made almost $100... the way she was talking~she acted like this is a new great way to make money............. i am in SHOCK.... & speechless. I have two suburban sized lawns (front and back) which are currently fescue grass and some clover, not tall fescue also known as fescue hay mind you, normal fescue grass. What would I have to do or grow to feed a family of rabbits year around in this space? If you tell me to buy pellets you're not understanding my question. cat spread bags of rubbish all over lawn & patio ; dirty nappys,mouldy food etc,will this make my toddler sick? My toddler picks flowers, she plays in the grass, she will touch things and then suck her thumb or put her hands on her face or in her hair, shes too little to understand not to. Origins of grass lawns? I hear the idea was imported from rich England into the US. Then the American Garden Club had it's campaign to convince everyone needed a lawn, Just so. My question is if there's any more available info regarding deeper, subversive motives. Perhaps the whole game was yet another socio-engineering ploy by the elite? Lawn care seems to be an Incredible waste of time and resources. However, I've made my living off lawns for some time now! But I'm finding myself easily annoyed, now, seeing such fuss over lawns. If, this were an ideal world that would be another thing. I saw a single post that opined lawns were in fact a scam to get folks out of growing their own (food) gardens. What's wrong with my 1 year old German Sheppard? My dog is really skinny (his ribs are showing), he eats regularly and I've wormed him twice. Occasionally I find puke on the lawn from him, that is usually dog food, but this is only once or twice a week. He otherwise seems happy, and is a regular hyper 1 yr old dog. I've had someone tell me that sheppards are generaly skinny and not to worry, but I thought maybe someone out there might have an idea as to what may be wrong with him if anything? According to economists in the US, shortages of grain and other food elements, combined with a falling US dollar, means that food prices will be shooting way up in the next several months (in the US - if you live somewhere with a strong currency like the Euro, congrats!). What does Bush plan to do to arrest this trend, and given how incompetent he is, is it fair to assume he WON'T be able to stop the trend, and therefore we should look out for ourselves? How come so many people have lawns, but not gardens? That doesn't make sense. Grass is idle. It doesn't produce anything you can use to sustain your life. But just by tearing up some grass and putting seeds in there, you can make the ground work for YOU. Even if you are lazy, just plant a bunch of very hardy root vegetables, like potatoes or turnips or something. They'll grow on their own, and you just harvest them when they are ready. Why don't more people do this? All you need to grow your own food is dirt. At their peak in WWII, victory gardens provided 25% of all vegetables consumed in the US. We should do this again. The president claims that he is "the decider."

My sister and I were getting more and more worried…we had learned way before then not to ask anything when Dad came home drunk every night forgetting stuff, like groceries. I think we had learned that in the womb. There was nothing in the ice box except a bottle of milk for the baby. On a lower shelf, half a jar of mayonnaise and about four slices of bread. Now, we knew we’d be going to Grandma’s for dinner, that wasn’t the point. The point was that my Mother wouldn’t ask for help in her shame. To ask for help was to be defeated, there was no greater sin than to be on welfare. If you had the choice between welfare and killing yourself and your kids you didn’t choose welfare. But she always stocked up on macaroni and margarine. Grandmother would send canned vegetables once in a while. Well, Dad came home at eight, drunker than Cooter Brown, barely able to walk, tracking in snow and beer stench, carrying a 35 pound turkey, twice the size of the baby sleeping in the old crib and three times too big to put in the oven. When he shoved the turkey at Mom, she snapped into slow motion, totally silent insanity. Took the bird, chucked it through the closed kitchen window. That crash was not silent, nor were Dad’s curses. Mom went to her bedroom, dressed in all the clothes she could layer on. She went out to the car, got in, curled into herself on the backseat, didn’t come out till the next morning. The old man passed out on the kitchen floor. My sister and I looked at each other. Now what? More food on the lawn than we had seen in weeks. We went out, brought it in, really butchered it, but we got it in the ice box without butchering ourselves. Got all the pieces of wood we could find in the cellar even though my sister was afraid of monsters under the stairs. I was more afraid of the ones upstairs. I nailed the wood over the window, smashing my thumb, raising a blood blister, but I would not cry. I threw a blanket over the old man, who never woke up once. We took the baby into bed with us, piled up blankets, coats, prayers for morning, mourning prayers, and prayers to wake up anywhere but there. When we woke up the baby was gone. Went into the kitchen where Dad was fixing the window, there was hot oatmeal on the stove, Mom rocking the baby. “Hurry up and eat, so we can get to Grandma’s and help”. . Then I knew my calling. To be sane, that’s all, just be sane.
Are there any food plants / vegetables that will grow wild in Zone 6(Western Kentucky)? I have 11 acres that are completely surrounded by urban development. They are "landlocked" and are not suitable for homes due to hills and valleys. There are foxes,turkeys,deer, groundhogs, rabbits, etc visiting the plot. Occasionally you see "volunteer" watermelons, tomatoes and other plants come up in the spring from discarded produce. Most current grocery produce is hybridized so subsequent generations tend to revert to plants similar to an ancestor.There are heirloom varieties of vegetables that breed true generation after generation. I would like to try an experiment where I plant varieties of food plants on my "farm" and leave them on their own to see how they would fare. It is unlikely for a successful plant to escape due to the geography and surrounding lawns/development. I already have pecan, hickory walnut and plum trees.
I'm A Feeding My Pigs The Right Food? I have 7 guniea pigs 2 adults and 5 babies. I have been feeding them romaine lettuce red,green,and yellow bell pepper everday,and cucumber here and there mostly on hot days. They get some peas and carrots every couple of days. Once in awhile i'll give them a couple grapes for a treat and apple. Have not gave the babies any apple yet but they love the grapes.Not including all the hay a pig could handle and dry fruits and pellets.My Question is are they getting enough goodies?Should i be giving them more veggies,like diffrent selction? Are flowers are ok for them to eat.I read on one sight they said there poisonous to them,but not have seen it yet in my search.The reason i ask is beacause the pet store sells a little dried flower salad bowl and it has dried flower in it. should i take the gamble of being self employed? i recently lost my job. i did not quit, but on my record of employment it says i quit. i was looking into financial assistance for people who are self employed and i must be on employment insurance to get it. i was thinking of starting a small business of mowing lawns and doing gardening. is this a waste of my time? should i just forget disputing my record of employment and settle for some fast food job and accept that i cant do any better?
Could someone please tell me why the people who complain the loudest about illegal immigrants...? are either young kids parroting today's media-hyped outcry...or grown folks with good jobs that most immigrants, legal or not, could never ever hope to get? So why are you complaining about them taking away "your" jobs? Are you going to clean my house, mow my lawn, cook my food, pick my produce? Are you willing to pay more for everything? Including the cost to locate, round up, warehouse, account for and transport 12-20 million people anywhere from 5 to 2,500 miles each? Isn't it all about MONEY to you? Is adding "Lime" to soil the same as adding calcium? In other words, can I grind up my enourmous supply of calcium carbinate tablets (expired products from a defunct health food store) and spread it and the acidic areas of my lawn? where can a 14 year old find a job? We live in Washington state and my son wants to work. We have fast food and grocery stores near by. He wants a regular job not just mowing lawns or babysitting. How to make money as a teen? I have a problem because I'm not yet old enough to work at the mall or local food places. My jobs not worth it? I pay more in gas money and babysitting than its worth to work. I work full time, overtime is mandatory, I only end up with about 50 extra dollars a week. Usually its for food. Should I just quit? I can make more money at home selling and buying things online. Or even mowing lawns. What would you do? I already asked for a raise, they basically laughed at me. I want to eat organic food? I once told my mom to start buying organic food and she said it so expensive and she told me it costs twice as much... Can I use human anibiotics on a toad my daughters and friend found in the yard.? My daughters and their friend found a tiny toad in the yard that has been injured. I think the little guys toes were cut off by the lawn mower maybe. At any rate it's missing some toes and it was bleeding. I put human antibiotic ointment on its injury. I have it in an old aquarium with fake flowers for cover, a small styrafoam cup with a door cut out for shelter, a little tiny water bowl, and rocks. I put a tiny cricket, a tiny slug, and a tiny earthworm in there too for food. Thus far the little guy hasn't eaten anything, but I'm not sure how often a toad eats. Any suggestions as to how to care for the little guy.

4 years later...Cat question? I went for a walk with my dog and as we turned the corner this tortishell cat came out of nowhere and kinda followed us. So I stopped and looked at it When I made eye contact with it, it started to meow and kept looking at me. But then my dog saw it and he started barking and she had her hairs up and everything, A few seconds later and a neighbour with her dog turned the corner. We started talking and our dogs were playing and stuff. As we talked, I was trying to look for the cat but could not see her. Then all of a sudden out of the bushes she jumps at the neighbours dog and we fled across the street. Of course we were schocked, but she did have a big belly but I think she was pregnant. Do you think she did that because she was pregnant? And the strange thing is...I am pretty sure I know that cat. Four years ago I found her on my lawn crying for food. So she slept outside my house. We even took her to the vet where she stayed there and eventually her owner was found. He He said she got out because she was i heat. And I am pretty sure its the same cat because although she is much bigger, she was only a few months when we found her. I guess all I want to know is, do you think she remembers me? Im no expert on cats but, the minute I saw her she looked so familiar. Do you think cats can remember? HELP! i caught a possum in my live trap and now cant catch squirrels? i have a havahart 1030 live trap for squirrels and rabbits, but i left it outside the other nite and awoke to a possum in the trap in the morning and he pooped a lot and probably peed. well i removed him from the trap and washed off all the poop from the trap and shoveled a layer of dirt the trap was on to make sure theres no more. well ever since then i havent caught a single thing. theres plenty of bait and no squirrels are even going near it. and also if it rained the nite before when do the squirrels usaully come out to eat the following morning. thank you very much. and please only serious answers i do not harm the animals i simply remove them from the property so they stop digging around my lawn looking for food and destroying things.
Am I wrong for telling my mother to stay away from my kids? Ok, here goes…. I have four children (2 biological (15 & 7)and 2 step (7 and 10) all boys). My mother singles out my biological 7 year old and babies him and actively shows favoritism toward him. She also comes to my house and when seeing the boys, will ask them to ask me if we can go to the movies or go out to eat. Or she will ask them to ask me if they can have a snack before dinner or lunch. I think that is putting them in the middle and have told her NOT to do it anymore. I told her that the grandparent has different rules and when the grandparent it the authority figure (when I nor wife are around) she can spoil them rotten(different rules when with grandparents) but when around me or my wife, we decide what happens with them. She even actively scolds me in front of them for disciplining “her pick” if she doesn’t think he needed to be disciplined. Given the fact that this is my house and I (my new wife and I) have custody of all four boys, I think she is way out of line and have told her that this is my house and not to question me in front of them with I am doing that. She also tells her friends and some of my family that she is supporting me because she takes all of us out to eat and shopping a lot. I don’t have a job near as good as hers and she knows I can’t afford to go out to eat or go shopping or to the movies all the time. I nor the children am not in NEED of food or anything else, she just buys things for us that “makes life easier” . Like she bought a riding lawn mower for me to use with the condition that I mow her yard too. The mower she later told me she wanted to gibe to my great uncle. I said, you bought it, you can do with it what you want. She said she would replace it for me. I spent 10 hours going from store to store looking for the best deal on models, features and prices. After that work was does and presented to her, she asked if I would rather have a Zero-Turn mower (about 3 times as expensive) I said sure, who wouldn’t. But it is so much more. She wanted to get the more expensive Zero-Turn for me so I said, OK. She put it in my name. She also had paid for me to have Dish network installed and paid for it for six months for me for my x-mas present one year. I have told her before that I am not comfortable with her spending that much on me because I want to be independent ( I am now 40). She now has told her friends that she is tired of supporting me and wants me to stand on my own two feet. She has told them and my family that I am asking her to take us out for food and clothing and lawn equipment. I have told her in the past that when she is in my home or with me, I am the authority figure for my children (all four of them). I have also told her to stop actively showing favoritism to the one child. I know it is hard to love non biological children the same as biological, but I have asked her to not SHOW it. She still does. She still contents that she is supporting me. I have asked her not to spend any more money on me. She still calls and wants to go out to eat when she knows I don’t have the money to do it. Now fast forward about a month. When I found out about what she is telling her friends and my/our family about me, I told her she is no longer welcome in my home and if she cannot quit showing favoritism, she is no longer allowed around the children. The last time we were together eating ice-cream, she snuck a bite of ice-cream to the “favorite”. My wife saw it and said “he does not need any more ice-cream”. As we all walked out of the store, she did it again and I gave her an evil look. My wife confronted her about it and now my mother is REALLY mad at my wife. Wife hates my mother. Now my mother is siding with my ex-wife trying to take my children away from me and give them to my ex since my ex said my mother can see the kids anytime she wants. Am I wrong for how I feel about me being a parent? Am I wrong for what I did and said? I would love her to be in their lives and we (me and wife) have begged her to meet with us to work this out for the kids sake. She refuses. I refuse to let them be around someone who is blatently disrespectful for me as a person and me as a parent. Also did not mention, I am in the middle (should be final in about 3 months) of adopting my two stepsons. The favoritism affects the 15 and the two stepsons in a negative way as they are always asking why she loves the "pick" more than them. The step sons maternal grandmother does not do the favoritism and they my origial two get along great with her. Now I am about to have 4 of mine legally and I don't want any favoritism shown as I nor my wife, her family or her ex's family shows any with the four kids.
Bees, do you really care about them? I have been hearing a lot about the problems with the bees and the relation to the cost of the rising prices of food. According to the news, Bees are normally rented out to farmers to pollenate their farms to produce fruit but due to chemicals that people are putting on their lawns seem to be killing all of the bees and therefore is a problem for the farmers and will make the cost of food rise? I realise that with the droughts, then floods it has been hard on farmers already but now the bees? My question to all of you is, if you could make a difference but not putting such harsh chemicals on your lawns to save the bee population would you do it? What happens if your lawn just dies from too many bugs? Is there anything else we can use on our lawns that would not be as harmful? I am not trying to be a tree hugger, but when is enough, enough for you? Does it bother you or not? I am not sure why this is bothing me so much? But it is! What kind of exercise can I do with my dog and how much dry food should he eat? November of last year I took in an underfed beagle/rat terrier mix that I found on my lawn. At the time he was 2 lbs more than my mini doxie of 9 lbs. He is now about 20 lbs! He looks like a huge tootsie roll. He is seriously too big for his frame. I'm going to take him to the vet next pay check, but what I can I do get a head start? How much dry food and what are some good exercises (other than obvious walking)? He also sleeps the majority of the day/night. He does like to play with other dogs though. All 4 of my other dogs are perfect weights and are almost pure muscle. My vet always compliments them, so he is definitely the odd one.
What are some effective ways to keep flys away from food? I love having outdoor shindigs, but I hate the whole fly part. We've tried spraying poison around our home and lawn (different type, right now we're using organic stuff), fly trap bags (those stink horribly) that you hang outside, electric bug zapper, and netting around food. Still those nasty things somehow manage to make being outside a bother. What else can I do to keep flys at bay?
What else can I use to make "Reindeer Food" besides oatmeal for my preschoolers? I have a child who is allergic to oats. Will a mixture of cornstarch, water and food coloring harm or damage grass? Cornstarch, water and food coloring are the ingredients for washable sidewalk paint. I've been wanting to make a big painting on the sidewalk of my front door with this mixture. Poison pet food - does anyone think this is something new? I have a feeling that if there IS stuff in pet food that is causing poisoning it has probably been there for a long time. How many pets die each year without anyone knowing why. Cats wander off and die all the time. We usually never find the body. How long until I see results from applying pre-emergent crabgrass killer? I live in Michigan, Mid western, and I put down a pre-emergent crabgrass killer and lawn food about a month ago. There is allot of crabgrass in the yard. Along with some new grass growing from overseeding last year. My question is..........how long until I can see the results? Did I apply at the proper time? It said on the bag to apply anywhere from March to May. Also that it could be applied up to four weeks later than other products. Crabgrass is still there. Do I need to pull it up by the roots or wait it out? If I pull it up.....OMG.... no way! There is allot of it. Thanks
Fertilizer - Why is it ok to just spread fertilizer rather than put deep in soil close to roots? I notice that all instructions i have read about putting fertilizer on my lawn (e.g. Scotts Turf Builder Fertilizer and Weed Control) always says to use a spreader (or dropper) to put the fertilizer on the "surface" of the lawn. From my understanding fertilizer contains valuable nutrients for the lawn (its food for the grass) and so i would best think it would work better if the fertilizer was closest to the lawn's roots found far underneath the surfce. So how then is tossing fertiizer on the surface of the grass useful? And wouldn't weeds just use the fertilizer as food too? If it burns them chemically because the fertilizer is so close to them then why do instructions mentions to use fertilizer in a mix with new seedlings -- you dont get closer to that and would that then burn the new seedling because the fertilizer is so close?

storing pet food near chemicals? I am concerned about my neighbor's cat. The owner stores the dry bagged food in a VERY small closet, with lawn and household chemicals. Is there any way to winter my Begonias? I have some really nice ones. I never thought you could but last spring I bought a disk like thing from a lawn and dog food store and it was a Begonia apparently in a dormant stage. It grew into a plant though it took all year to develop. Its on my window sill but I still have more outside I would like to save before the frost. I keep other roots and bulbs in my basement. Am I the only adult that still believes in Santa? I'm 21 years old and I still believe in Santa. On Christmas Eve my mom and sister read The Night Before Christmas and leave out cookies and milk for Santa and leave the chimney gates open for him to enter. Where can a minor get a job in Alabama? I am a determined, home-schooled, mature, christian, fourteen year old living in Huntsville, AL. For the past year and a half, I have mowed multiple lawns for money. the pay and hours were good, but, because of phisycal problems, I am being forced to seek a part-time job elsewhere. Does anybody know a way to get a passionfruit vine to flower? The vines are vigorous enough as I have fed them everything under the Sun....as the soil is sandy and barren. I live in Perth and am wondering if the 6 weeks of extreme heat we have had has something to do with it. What do you think of "organic" people? Organic food, organic potting soil, organic lawn fertilizer, all natural everything? The people that I know that are "organic" have the sickest kids that I have ever met. The kids come over and the first thing out of their mouth is can we have a treat? Can we have juice? Because the stuff they eat tastes like cardboard. I am thinner, more athletic and clearly healthier than these people. I don't think the organic thing is all that it is hyped up to be. Do you agree?
