How did people mow their lawns before lawnmowers were invented? Just something that popped into my head. I'm sure that their were lawns and gardens back as far as medieval times. So throughout history, how did people mow their lawns?

In the UK, do many people use professional lawn care companies to fertilize and treat their lawns? Just curious as to what people in the UK usually do to their lawns throughout the year. IS it the same as here in the US where people either pay or do it themselves to have herbicides applied to their lawn as well as fertilization treatments? how does it work out? If you open a small business mowing lawns, what is the best/most common way to contract your customers? I've been thinking about opening a business mowing lawns in the summer and plowing snow in the winter now for the last 2 years now, except I've never actually worked in the industry. Why is everyone burning their lawns? I know that controlled burning is good every three years or so for prairie grass restorations, but this spring everyone has been burning their lawns. Several people who live by me, a golf course in the area, and een a local municipality burned its ditch frontage just today on a state highway. Is this supposed to help control weeds?
